Top Canadian electronica music producer and DJ Deadmau5 appears poised to make San Diego music history. His Oct. 26 sold-out concert at SOMA is being moved to Oct. 28 and to a dramatically larger venue: Petco Park. No other SOMA show before has ever been moved to Petco Park.
For those doing the math, SOMA has a capacity of 2,400. Petco, the home of the San Diego Padres, can — depending on the stage placement and seating configuration — accommodate concert audiences of between 6,000 and 43,000 (which is what the Rolling Stones drew for its 2005 Petco show).
The above is all a matter of record. But an air of confusion seems to cloak the deadmau5 concert at Petco, for which tickets were supposed to have gone on sale Wednesday. That date was pushed back until noon Friday, to allow the concert’s promoter and the operators of Petco to hammer out specific details. Apparently, those details are still being hammered.
What will the capacity be for the all-ages Deadmau5 show at Petco — his first ever baseball stadium show and part of his ongoing Meowingtons Hax tour? Depends who you ask.
According to Live Nation, the concert’s producer, the capacity will be 15,000. But a Padres’ representatives was unable to confirm that number. On-field seating for the Petco Park concerts by Madonna and the Rolling Stones was 9,000 and 8,000, respectively. However, there will be standing-room only and no seats for the deadmau5 concert at Petco, which could allow more people on the field, but likely not 15,000.
At least 2,400 seats in the stands will be used to accommodate the 2,400 fans who bought tickets ($50 each) for the original SOMA show by deadmau5, which sold-out in three weeks. Those same tickets will be valid at the new Petco date, but fans will have to pay to trade up for on-field tickets. Whether those 2,400 seats are being counted as part of the show’s 15,000 capacity is also unclear.
Another source of confusion is the ticket prices. According to the Padres, field tickets ($90 each, including service charges) — and only those $90 field tickets — will go on sale at noon Friday at Ticketmaster for the all-ages deadmau5 show at Petco.
As of this writing, according to Ticketmaster’s web page for the show, $171 tickets (including service fees) will also go on sale tomorrow. A Live Nation rep tells us those $171 tickets are indeed for VIP packages (what the VIP perks are remains to be seen), although the Ticketmaster page makes no reference to any VIP options.
